Load securing

Securing loads on a truck - an important part of fleet safety.

Load securing is an elementary component of commercial road transport and affects all companies with their own vehicle fleet. It serves to protect people, vehicles and the goods being transported. Incorrect or inadequate securing can not only cause serious accidents, but can also have legal and financial consequences.

What is load securing?

Load securing refers to all measures taken to secure the transported goods against slipping, tipping or falling. The aim is to ensure that the load does not change position even during sudden braking, evasive maneuvers or cornering.

Legal basis, the obligation to secure loads is enshrined in law, including in:

  • §22 StVO: Securing the load according to the recognized rules of technology
  • §22 StVZO: Operational safety of vehicles
  • VDI Guideline 2700: Technical rules for securing loads on road vehicles

Both the driver and the vehicle owner or the company are responsible.

Types of load securing

  • Form-fit securing: the load is packed without gaps against the loading area boundary
  • Force-locking securing: use of lashing equipment such as straps, anti-slip mats or tension rods
  • Combined security: mixture of both methods to increase security

Load securing in fleet management Professional fleet management ensures that:

  • Vehicles are equipped with suitable load securing technology
  • Driving personnel are regularly trained
  • Check and document the load securing
  • Responsibility is clearly regulated (e.g. through driver instruction in accordance with UVV)

Consequences of inadequate load securing

  • Accident risk: danger for drivers, other road users and goods
  • Fines and points: Sanctions according to StVO and StVZO
  • Liability risks: Civil and criminal consequences for companies and drivers

Conclusion

Load securing is not only a legal obligation, but also a decisive factor for road safety and the integrity of transportation. Responsible fleet management pays attention to technical equipment, training and monitoring in order to avoid risks and ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
