Micromobility

Micromobility refers to the use of lightweight, mostly electrically powered vehicles for short distances – typically less than 10 kilometers. Micromobility is playing an increasingly important role in companies, particularly in the context of sustainable mobility concepts and flexible fleet strategies.

What is micromobility?

Micromobility includes various types of vehicles that are characterized by their small size, manoeuvrability and environmental friendliness:

  • E-scooters and scooters
  • Cargo bikes (often electrically assisted)
  • Segways or similar self-balancing vehicles
  • Some very small e-vehicles with a maximum speed of less than 25 km/h

These means of transportation are particularly suitable for the “last mile”, inner-city courier services, business trips on company premises or as a supplement to the classic vehicle fleet.

Significance for fleet management

More and more companies are integrating micromobility as part of a multimodal mobility offering. The advantages:

  • SustainabilityMicromobile vehicles emit no emissions and promote environmentally friendly behavior.
  • Cost savings: Purchase, maintenance and operating costs are significantly lower than for conventional company vehicles.
  • Flexibility: Employees can cover distances more efficiently and independently – even in busy cities.
  • Relieving the burden on the vehicle fleet: Micromobility relieves the burden on the motorized vehicle fleet for short trips and saves parking space.

Challenges and requirements

Despite many advantages, there are also challenges:

  • Infrastructure: Safe parking facilities, charging stations and well-developed cycle paths are essential.
  • Insurance & regulations: E-bikes and e-scooters are also subject to regulations regarding road safety, mandatory helmets and insurance cover.
  • Integration into existing systems: Fleet managers need to plan micromobility strategically and integrate it sensibly into vehicle management.

Conclusion

Micromobility is a building block of modern, sustainable mobility concepts in the vehicle fleet. Whether as a supplement to the company car, for internal journeys or as an incentive for climate-conscious behavior: Companies that make sensible use of micromobility benefit in several ways – ecologically, economically and organizationally.
